Born the year of the first Vulcan prototype flight, Robert grew up in the golden era of air shows where the Vulcan would always make a lasting impression. A self taught artist, his desire to paint was matched only by his desire to fly and whilst on the ‘V’ force he attained both being commissioned for artworks and continuing to fly. During that time he was responsible for the renovation of the Tirpitz bulkhead painting, a disputed gift from the Norwegian people to both 617 and IX Squadrons after the sinking of the battleship in a Norwegian fjord. That was matched by the pleasure of handling an aircraft like the Vulcan. Able to climb to fifty thousand feet, but also weave in and out of valleys of northern Canada at two hundred feet, it was a responsive agile aircraft which did not feel like the heavy bomber that it was. The unique shape and limited visibility within the cockpit demanded respect for the aircraft at all times. Never more so, perhaps, than during air to air refuelling in which Robert trained during the summer of 1982.
Upon leaving military service Robert continued to paint developing his own style to work internationally in murals and furniture, but always returning to his first love of pure artwork and aviation. He now lives in East Sussex and divides his time between painting and commercial airline training.
